Appropriately published on the day of our state primary. I am always appreciative of my right to vote and thankful to those who helped secure that right.
In every historical capsule you note: independence, civil war, emancipation, civil rights, post WWII liberalism (and those you didn't mention: women's suffrage and equal rights, LGBTQ rights, environmental protection) progressive citizens and leaders were right, and conservative voices were wrong. The history of civilization is progressive. We look at the exact same historical details, and yet come to opposite views of how to achieve a more perfect union. Like Mendel's plants, we can see the results of the experiment without knowing how the DNA molecules actually function. Perhaps psychology will advance in the future to explain why some people see liberal democracy as the path forward, while others embrace Trumpish Oligarchy (Putin, Orban, Thiel, Trump, etc.)
The only constant you seem to advance is that I don’t bludgeon reactionaries over the head therefore I empower them. This space exists to speak to responsible citizenship first and dialogue second. After that, collective action wins the day.
Our evolution is, by its very existence, the prevailing forces of progressive thought struggling against the status quo. Do you really need me to spout a cliched good versus evil narrative that you can read in thousands of other places? If yes, there are thousands of other places to have at it.
You keep reading and commenting, so there is something here for you. Thank you for the engagement. Even if it’s critical of me, it is always welcome.
