Wonderful. Such a titanically flawed man. I'll never forget the intense political attraction I had (from a distance) for a man who seemed to embody a number of fundamental ideological tenets for which I had affection in the early days of the Obama Administration. Sanford was in a class by himself at the time, as he could make a coherent argument and do it in a folksy, effective manner. Your story here about how he reacted to Livingston, and how he did not shy from confronting him reinforces that initial political attraction. What I saw in the Governor's office you oversaw--did much to diminish it. Never meet your heroes, right?

On the horizon is how Mark became Governor Sanford and future President Sanford. It goes back to The Man v. The Brand. I’ll share a story of where Mark became Governor Sanford and how that created a permanent divide between us.

I wonder...is the current President an example of there being little or no difference between 'The Man" and "The Brand"? Do people get this, and in some jaundiced way consider it "authentic"?

All I ever see is a guy not good enough to meet Fred Trump’s approval and obsessively getting people to see him the way he sees himself. He’s, regrettably, tapped the “life ain’t the way it used to be” anxiety of the Baby Boomers to promise them we can go back to some idealized variant of the past. That brand is only salient as long as old folks who have always been the center of attention remain.
